Mike loved to visit his parents. Whenever the chance arose to see them, he took it. He knocked on the door. His mother always told him that he didn’t have to knock like some stranger, but he did it anyway.

“Baby!” His mother squeezed him hard.

He never minded. Her hugs were the best.

“Hey, Mom.” Mike was tired. A hard day would do that to you. Hell, a hard damn month.

“You look like shit, my sweet boy.” His mom dragged him inside, and he complied.

“Telling me I look like shit and that I’m sweet in the same sentence. Only you, Mom.” He chuckled.

His mom had always had the biggest heart. But also an honest one.

“Where’s dad?” He glanced around the house.

“He’s outside. He’ll be a minute.”

The hallways were filled with pictures of him and Kane when they were little. His mother loved his best friend like he was her other son. And Kane certainly loved her like a mother. While he’d lived with his aunt, Kane had spent a lot of his childhood and teenage years in Mike’s home.

There were baby pictures on the wall, first grade pictures, teen pictures. But the end of the hallway seemed to have been recently cleared to make space for more pictures.

Mike stopped. “What’s this?”

“Oh, that’s the grandbabies wall space.”

Mike coughed, choking on his own saliva. “Mom, I don’t have kids yet.” He sputtered.

“I know that. I’m not dumb. But you and Kane will work on your families soon enough, so, I thought I’d be ready.” With complete calm, she spoke of the children he had yet to provide for the crazy, loving woman walking in front of him.

They entered the living room and he sat at the bar that connected it to the kitchen. “Mom, don’t mention this to Kane. He’s going to freak the hell out.”

“No cursing in my house, young man.” Her narrowed, olive eyes settled on him.

“What’s the matter, sweetheart?”

His dad entered the house and heard his mom scold him. It wasn’t like he was trying to piss her off. He just hadn’t spent a lot of time around her lately—a shame to admit—and he forgot to watch his mouth.

“Your son is being a little brat.” She turned on her heel, and left the room.

“What’d you do now? You’ve been here all of five minutes, and she’s already scolding you, referring to you as my son.”

His father had aged well. He had salt-and-pepper hair, a beer belly, and he sometimes groaned when he got up, but, for the most part, the man looked like he was ready to take on the world for his kids. Again.

“She has a damn wall for the grandbabies, and there are none in sight! Isn’t that kind of crazy?” She'd been saying for years that she wanted babies to cuddle, and they better get to work. With women in their lives, she'd be relentless.

He groaned inside. Kane was going to laugh his ass off, at least until he heard he was expected to make grandbabies, too.
